RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
