The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
