In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
