The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
