Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
